Hey cactus & succulent plant folks! Some of you will have noticed that I started a new series of 'Shorts' videos recently... they are appearing in the periods in between, and in addition of course to my longer videos. I thought that you might be interested in these short, "special feature" type updates, focused on "what's currently in bloom in Joe's cactus greenhouse?"

These summer months constantly bring a flurry of beautiful and awesome blooms, which I am not always able to play back and share with yourselves as fast as I might want to...so, I thought that this format might be a quite good one to share more and more frequently with yourselves.

If you have not seen them yet, here are some links to some examples:
www.youtube.com/shorts/QU80Lq...
www.youtube.com/shorts/K9COyG...
www.youtube.com/shorts/RzEHkv...

What do you all think? Is this a format and series worth continuing with? Do you find this format of sharing blooms and introducing various different types of plants that I grow an effective and useful one? Please let me know, leave a comment, or just give me a thumbs-up LIKE below...Thank you!

Happy growing my friends!

Cheers,
Joe

Hey, my cactus & succulent fans and friends! Thank you all, for joining me last week, to see that awesome cactus nursery Matk...and it's breathtaking personal collection of plants! WOW, what a response, a record number of visitors and views, and I'm really glad that you all enjoyed it as much as I did, judging by the feedback ...THANK YOU all! Well, as promised, there is a follow-up video, looking into that all-important question: "...did Joe actually buy any plants from that nursery?"

What do you all think?

Some of you had already put in some guesses earlier, even mentioned some genus names of potential candidates, I was amazed how close some of you were!

Any further guesses, my friends? Let me know in the comments below ...and once again there will be a special mention on this channel for all of those who got at least one selected genus right!

All will be revealed in the plant haul video, this coming Saturday, July 20th!

For those of you who have not yet had a chance to visit this quite unique and unbelieavable nursery:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKfib...

Hopefully see you all, take care, and until then: Happy Growing!!

Cheers,
Joe

Hi everyone, hope you and your plants are all having a wonderful day! Hey, feel like joining me for a cool VISIT to a CACTUS & SUCCULENT PLANTS NURSERY once again? I won't give away any more, but: THIS IS A TRULY SPECIAL ONE to experience and see! Founded way back in 1906, so almost 120 years ago .... it has a huge and incredible selection of very healthy and rare plants for sale ... AND also has one of the most impressive PRIVATE COLLECTIONS of cacti & other succulent plants that I have ever seen on display!

I think that after the visit there, you will agree with me that this private collection can easily compete, hands down, with most botanical garden succulent greenhouses around the world! And in total, there are also over 1,300 square meters (ca. 14,000 sq. ft.) of greenhouses filled with beautiful cacti & other succulent plants for sale to explore!

And what I also found super cool: this family-run nursery is now being run by the 4th generation of gardeners ... and there are some breath-taking cacti on display here that were grown from seed by the founding generation, over 100 years ago!

Come join me for an unforgetable trip, and see this absolutely awesome cactus & succulent nursery and private collection for yourselves!

The video will be uploaded this coming Saturday, July 13th ...and if you're interested in joining the trip, we'll meet, as always, in front of my cactus greenhouse ‪@cactusjoe‬ !

See you soon and see you there! Until then, happy growing!

Cheers,
Joe

Hey, my fellow cactus & succulent plant enthusiasts... fancy joining me on a trip to visit and experience a stunningly beautiful, breathtaking countryside and it's unique nature... far, far away from my little cactus greenhouse in Bavaria, Germany? Yes, perhaps? Then, please read on...

Ever since I started growing and collecting cacti as a young boy, I have been intrigued by photos of the giant columnar cacti of the Sonoran Desert, the world-famous Saguaros (Carnegiea gigantea)...and it has been a life-long dream of mine to visit these gentle giants one day, and to hike among them, experiencing the desert in spring! Talking of botanical bucketlist highlights, haha... so finally, earlier this year, I had the unique opportunity to realize exactly that dream and to travel to the Saguaro National Park and surrounding areas of the city of Tucson in wonderful Arizona, USA!

Please join me, if you are interested, on a hike through cactus country together, lot's of nature, plants, including cacti of course, duh, and other interesting sights...the video will be uploaded to my channel tomorrow, Friday, June 21st ...there's no better way to celebrate the summer solstice 2024, lol!

See you then, come prepared, boots, hat, shades and sunscreen!

Cheers,
Joe

WHAT TO DO, my friends and fans of succulent and caudiciform plants? Unfortunately this is a common scenario: when the normally bright green, beautiful leaves of their ELEPHANT's FOOT succulent plant (Dioscorea elephantipes) suddenly start to CHANGE THEIR COLOR to a yellowish-brown...and also begin to WILT and fall off in late Spring (i.e. NOW on the northern hemisphere)...well, a lot of people then actually do something POTENTIALLY FATAL for the plant...

If you would like to find out WHAT DEFINITELY NOT TO DO... then why not check out my upcoming SHORTS video, to be uploaded to my channel, CACTUS JOE, this Friday, June 14th!

Do you have an idea what I could be talking about, i.e. what I would definitely recommend you do NOT do? PLEASE HAVE A GUESS IN THE COMMENTS SECTION BELOW - all guesses are WELCOME! (...and btw, I made this painful and expensive mistake for many years myself!!).

A quick hint: it is not necessarily what you WOULD expect at this time of the year, when most of our plants are bursting into full growth and flowering mode!

However, if you DO the right thing at this time of the year, your plants will remain healthy, and be once again showing off their absolutely awesome bright green foliage throughout the cooler Winter months! I hope this information and growing tip helps you avoid unnecessary losses of these wonderful and precious plants in your collections!

See you on my channel this Friday, take care and happy growing,

Cheers,
Joe

Hi everyone, the past month of May (...despite it's roller-coaster weather here...) had lot's of my plants in the cactus greenhouse break into bloom! And after several recent 'Shorts' videos, it's time for a longer video once again ...so I really wanted to share the past month's beautiful display of flower colors, shapes and sizes with you all, my cactus & succulent plant friends! The video will be uploaded to my channel tomorrow, Saturday, June 1st...a CACTI & SUCCULENT BLOOMS LOOK-BACK ON MAY 2024!!

By the way, if you missed out on the recent series of 'Shorts' videos, where I featured a few different types of my favorite cacti, but also shared an awesome action close-up video of a bee dancing in the pollen of a huge Echinopsis cactus bloom...then feel free to check them out on my channel too! And btw, if you have your subscription set to "receive automatic notifications" (i.e. click the bell icon next to the subscribe button), you will not miss another video being uploaded to CACTUS JOE going forward.

Also, did you know that you can share videos and channel links with like-minded friends, family and other plant enthusiasts? If you know of others who might be interested in watching and subscribing to the videos on my channel, then I'd be delighted if you simply shared the links to my channel or videos with them. Thank you all so much for your support!

Which, last but certainly not least, also brings me to another really important topic: this channel will soon reach the awesome milestone of 3000 subscribers, incredible and fantastic!! ...A VERY WARM AND BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL, FOR SUBSCRIBING, ACTIVELY ENGAGING AND SUPPORTING!! HAPPY GROWING!!!

Cheers, see you in the greenhouse tomorrow, and enjoy the video!

Hey, my fellow cactus friends, fans & enthusiasts, it's high time for an update from me once again! I am frequently asked the question: "...AND WHICH ARE YOUR FAVORITE CACTI, that you most enjoy growing, Joe?". Well, that is a somewhat difficult one to answer, as I have a lot of favorites of course, haha (...as you may have already guessed, based upon how FULL my cactus greenhouse is, lol!!!). I don't think I could single out just ONE most prefered one, haha! You see, if that were to be the case, I suppose I would have my entire cactus glasshouse filled up with just that one single species, lol!

However, if perhaps the question was slightly re-phrased to something like: "...and if you had to re-start your collection completely from scratch, then which cacti would you choose first?"...

OK, well that would obviously also depend a bit on where I could place and grow them...BUT, if I had a sunny and warm place to grow them in the summers...and a cool and dry spot to keep them inside (sheltered from freezing temperatures) over their winter dormancy period, ...well then... I think I would probably choose a few plants from the cactus genus THELOCACTUS!

Perhaps that comes as a surprise to yourselves, as these cacti are not that frequently found and grown in many cactus collections. That's because they are not so frequently on offer or sold, especially outside of specialist cactus nurseries. But they are stocked by most cactus growers and sellers, and can also quite easily be grown from seeds.

Thelocactus is a genus that has been among my absolute favorites for several decades of growing cacti! The magnificent beauty of the plants themselves, as well as the incredible variety of blooms that they develop is simply breathtaking! And in spring, some of the very first cactus plants to always show off their absolutely awesome blooms in the cactus glasshouse are my various cacti from the genus Thelocactus.

So, in order to share some of these beautiful Thelocactus and their blooms with you, I have put two short videos together - the first one was uploaded to my channel yesterday, Friday May 3rd:

youtube.com/shorts/pAkeLMA9OV0

... and another one will be coming out for you tomorrow, Sunday May 5th:

youtube.com/shorts/n0GAO2stQGU

So, let me know what you think of these, and whether you are growing any Thelocactus yourself?

AND also, please do let me know which YOUR FAVORITE CACTI are, with a short reply or comment below. Thanks, and really looking forward to all your personal favorites!

Cheers,
Joe

Yaaaay!! Spring is finally here (...on the northern hemisphere, that is)!! The quiet, buzzing snoring sounds in my collection of cacti & other succulent plants (...during the cactus dormancy period) have come to an end - and cactus action is slowly coming back into my greenhouse...signs of new growth, new leaves & shoots, and new flower buds!

It takes special care to slowly adjust and prepare the plants, especially the cacti, for the upcoming growing season - after their long, dark, cool and dry winter dormancy break. I usually carefully spray the plants lightly, using luke-warm rain water, once or twice when the temperatures start rising - that will often be in early March:
youtube.com/shorts/k3GNCTw9Ro...

Then, about two to three weeks later, the first light watering will occur - and another light watering perhaps two weeks later:
https://youtu.be/GkL_0lbqojo?si=UYLeF...

By this time we are into the month of April and plant growth can now seriously start - often in conjunction with the first wonderful blooms on my cacti and other succulent plants. The first fertilizing in my collection will only happen in early May, when plants have redeveloped their root systems again fully, after the long winter break and spring "re-awakening":
https://youtu.be/jf63ukEaSBc?si=bMsDb...

I will be posting a series of Short videos from my Spring-time greenhouse over the coming 2-3 weeks, to give you some "prickly" impressions from my re-awakened collection - starting tomorrow, Saturday, March 23rd.

Sit back and enjoy with me!

Cheers,
Joe

My fellow cactus & succulent plant enthusiasts! The transition period between winter dormancy and spring-time re-awakening is always an exciting time for us, and for our plants - and certainly for me, it's a very busy one too! This is usually when I repot those cacti that have outgrown their pots, or are in need of fresh growing substrate.

Repotting many of the smaller plants is a simple routine procedure. Dozens per hour! However, whenever the golden oldies, rare or very special plants are due for re-potting, the routine stops and special care, lot's of TLC, a lot more time and sometimes unique solutions may be required!

One such case, last week, was when I decided that my 25+ year old group of Living Rock Cacti (Ariocarpus fissuratus) was finally up for re-potting!! They had already seriously expanded and cracked open the styrofoam box that they had been growing in for over a decade...so, how did I go about this task? ...what new growing vessels did I choose? ...and what about the new substrate? ...most importantly, did it work, or did things go terribly wrong?

If you are interested in finding out, then please check in to my new upcoming video ...scheduled to be uploaded to my channel tomorrow, Friday, March 8th!!

See you hopefully all in my greenhouse, ready to help out, with some serious repotting business!

Enjoy,
Joe

Hey, cactus & succulent plants fans! Quite a lot of you have been asking me questions like: "How do I best choose and buy some suitable cacti and other succulent plants, especially if I am a beginner or relative newcomer to the hobby?" and "How do I avoid buying unhealthy, stressed or unsuitable plants?" or "Which ones are suitable cacti or other succulent plants for me as a beginner?"...indeed, folks, these are really important questions that we all face or have faced as collectors, and these are exactly the questions that I am addressing in my new video, which will be uploaded this coming Saturday, February 3rd!

Some of the topics I will be covering in the video are:
- Buying some cacti and other succulent plants as a newcomer to the hobby...
- Some plants to avoid buying...tell-tale signs and 'bad news' signals to look out for!
- Some other cacti, I would also NOT recommend buying!
- Some plants that should come with a health hazard warning!
- Plants that are pretty, but do not usually live very long...
- Try these: some excellent cacti & succulents for beginners (in my view, at least, haha!)
- What to check and do, with your new plants at home.

I hope you find this video and topic useful, informative and entertaining! Would be fantastic if you joined me, let's go!

Cheers,
Joe
